Hi All,
Just a quick post to say I bumped into 'beautiful Ella' the sausage dog. We greeted each other while the humans chatted. Ella was quite cross about my comment in a previous post that she might struggle to eat bones with her short legs, and told me that it was an insult to suggest she was in any way different to me! I hadn't mean to offend her but she was quite put out and wouldn't let it drop. In my frustration (as I really couldn't understand what all the fuss was about) I told her to grow up and not to take things so personally, not happy that I might have insulted her a second time, I told her that if she gets any fatter, she'll have to straddle a 'roller skate' to get about! I shouldn't have said that but I was really cross with her and it just 'came out!'. That was it, she flew into a range and swore at me, telling me that my 'fluffy trousers' proved I was a cress bred and I looked silly! I swore back and we exchanged a barrage cross words until the humans picked us up to stop us arguing.
We were both scalded and made to apologise. I said I was very sorry and meant it this time, I hope we can still be friends. Some of the best friendships are established on the back of a good frank argument! (Mouse and I have had 'words' before but we are the best of mates! It just depends on whether Ella is prepared to 'bury the hatchet' and move on! She did wave when we parted so I take that as 'we are cool'
When I returned home, I told mouse about my argument, she rolled around in fits of laughter about the 'roller skate' comment congratulating me on my 'diplomacy', she said that its all very well to speak out, but unless the other dog is self assured or has your sense of humour they will only take things personally. Some dogs are very insecure, they need praise and compliments to feel important, I should realise that the beautiful Ella, might just be trying to 'fit in' and is aware that her little legs do in fact hold her back! After all, I am in the fortunate position of being able to go hunting and out with the horses, she might secretly wish she could do the same. Next time I see her, I will try to think of nice things to say which will make her feel special.
