As we are now part of the routine of riding out with mummy, we are seeing a lot of what is taking place on the farm. I now know why it was so important we learnt about ‘hound’ exercise. There are lots of big scary tractors at work here, some of them have huge noisy trailers and plough like machinery behind them, some travel at great speed throwing out carrots and potatoes as they rattle up and down the sand tracks while others crawl up and down the fields at a snail pace. Mummy is very strict about where we go, we are not allowed to roam free range and are constantly checked to make sure we don’t stray.
The fields form parcels of thousands of acres of farm land, there are lots of crops grown in the fields, all different shapes, sizes and smells. For a while we regularly saw carrots on the roads, which fallen from the tractor's trailers as they turned the tighter corners on the single lane tracks. Mummy always stopped and picked them up for the horses, we liked this because it meant we had some too. The thing I didn’t like was the sand, I soon discovered not to steal the ones that hadn’t been washed, otherwise they tasted of dirt and the grit gave my teeth a horrid sensation.
Other crops we regularly see are onions, these seem to be in all different shapes and sizes. (Mummy has been known to stop and pick these up too). Sometimes I have seen the onions and carrots onions with little teeth marks on them, Mouse told me the deer sometimes eat then, I am trying to learn the difference between rabbit and deer teeth marks, they are definitely different and sometimes I can still smell the animal, this can only mean that it had not long been eating there and we might have only just missed it.
More recently, the fields nearest to the ‘horses house’ have changed. Mummy used to spend lots of time riding in boring circles and walking slowly between the adjoining fields. These have now changed so much it is like another planet, I overheard Chris talking about ‘bed forming’ I think this means the deep furrows and ridges that have appeared. I know who has done this, Kevin from next door, he drives a really big tractor called a ‘Challenger’ I believe this is the ‘Millennium Falcon’ of the tractor world. (Whatever that is, mummy talks about things is Star Wars speak, I guess that means flippin' huge, powerful and expensive!)
Anyway, back to the furrows, these are great, Mouse and I had a race, I lost of course, Mouse is able to spring athletically between each furrow in one graceful leap! I have to jump the gap from ridge to ridge with a couple of strides in-between, my legs are far too short to manage it in one. We played this game for the length of an entire field, mummy was laughing out loud! The other fun we have is Seagull chasing, for some reason, this field pattern attracts the birds. Mouse told me they are eating the bugs overturned in the fresh soil beds. all I can say is they must have good eyesight, everything is covered in sand!
Mouse and I discovered a game, its great fun, we sneak up on the birds by running between the furrows, they don’t notice us till the last minute and all scatter in a big panic, we play this game as long as we can until Mummy calls us to catch up! The birds swear and curse at us, we think its hilarious!
Have to go now, mummy said it’s time for ‘tinkles’ I haven’t been out for about three hours and the back yard needs checking for intruders.
Later's. xx
